BlackBerry may have hung its curtains as far as in-house design and building of smartphones is concerned, but with the Canadian company handing over rights to its smartphones to TCL Communications there is a strong possibility of launch of a new BlackBerry smartphone at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017.

The possibility is reflected in a series of tweets that have been sent out through the official account of TCL Communication in North America as well as a short cryptic tweet by Steve Cistulli, President, and GM, wherein he just states: “Remington No. 2 of 1878 #TheNewBlackBerry”. The series of tweets by TCL North America contain the hashtag #TheNewBlackBerry and this is an indication that something is already cooking behind the closed doors at TCL North America and it’s most likely a recipe of a new BlackBerry smartphone.

The deal with TCL is in line with BlackBerry’s strategic decision of parting ways from the smartphone manufacturing business and to strengthen its position as a software and services giant. BlackBerry has immense presence in enterprise mobility and security solutions and that’s something that the company intends to build on post the smartphone deal with TCL. BlackBerry effectively lost the smartphone game to Apple and Samsung and decided to call it quits from this niche earlier this year.

BlackBerry DTEK60 was the last smartphone that was launched directly by BlackBerry and now it will be TCL that will release BlackBerry branded smartphones. TCL has revealed that its devices will be coupled with BlackBerry’s security software and service suite and then sold in the market.

If it is indeed a new BlackBerry smartphone that TCL has already worked on and built, what better a platform for the launch than the CES 2017 in January.
