The 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLE has been spotted in Europe in heavily camouflaged avatar revealing almost nothing about the new design.
The CLE nametag is going to be adopted instead of the CLS and while the overall looks do resemble the current outgoing model, it will be much more aggressive than the first generation CLS. Mercedes-Benz will have to ensure that the new CLE will be much better than the sequel of the CLS that is currently available as it didn’t manage to create quite the ripple the automaker would have wanted.
If you look at the camouflaged Mercedes-Benz CLE you will find that the front and rear have deceiving bulges and these bulges effectively hide the actual shape of the car to a great extent. The headlight does give us a clue about what could be hiding inside the camo and that’s the more aggressive look than the current model.
What is also certain is the Mercedes-Benz will be bringing over E-Class underpinnings and drivetrains to the CLE and that’s why we believe that the model has been named CLE and not CLS. This adoption of the E-Class features will mean that the new car will come in a range of options including the turbocharged four-cylinder and V6 petrol and diesel engines, as well as the E 63’s 603bhp turbocharged V8 engine for the AMG CLE 63 model.
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLE will carry a price tag that is somewhere in between that of the E-Class and the S-Class. Mercedes CLS has always been pitched to those who are seeking out more exclusivity than the mid-sized sedan can offer, but don’t want a car that feels like it should come with a chauffeur either.
This means that the new Mercedes-Benz CLE will, like the BMW X6 or the GLE Coupe, will enable its owners to reveal that they care more about design than practicality.
Whether the CLS/CLE will also get a hybrid version remains to be seen, but given Mercedes-Benz’s current push into electric territory, it shouldn’t surprise anyone.
