Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) fans were treated with a great announcement that two of the show’s first three ‘lost’ episodes have finally been found.
The announcement was made by series creator Joel Hodgson on Kickstarter page. “I’m happy to tell you that we finally found master tapes for two of the three “lost KTMA episodes” of MST3K: Invaders from the Deep, and Revenge of the Mysterons from Mars”, noted Hodgson.
As the history for the series goes, the first three episodes of the show were recorded at the very beginning of MST3K’s original run on KTMA in Minneapolis. The episodes have been made available to all those backers who donated to the MST3K Kickstarter at the level to earn “Classic MST3K Bonus Episodes.” You can find them by logging in to your VHX account and going to the “Classic Episodes” section.
One popular fan theory regarding the lost episodes was that the Best Brains co-founder Jim Mallon has been holding the tapes of the lost episodes all this time. But Hodgson doesn’t make any mention of Mallon in the announcement. Instead he says that he thought that they had discovered copies of these episodes at one point during the Kickstarter campaign in 2015, but they actually hadn’t.
“But then, earlier this year, a few final boxes turned up. And there they were: the very first episodes of MST3K ever made”, he notes.
Of the two episodes that have been found, the first is Invaders from the Deep (1981). It is about when aquatic aliens plot to take over the planet, the world aquanaut security patrol are called in to battle the aliens. The other one is the Revenge of the Mysterons from Mars (1981) wherein Captain Scarlet and friends battle the Mysterons from Mars.
Hodgson notes in his Kickstarter update that re-watching the episodes nearly 30 years after they were made is rough, but that he is proud of them nonetheless. Chances are that these episodes will be released to the public at some point soon, but we are not sure when.
