A top Microsoft executive has confirmed that the company isn’t having Surface Pro 5 on its mind right now and that the Surface Pro 4 doesn’t even exist right now.
The statement that shattered the hopes of millions of Microsoft Surface Pro fans came from none other than Panos Panay, the corporate vice president for Surface, Microsoft. According to Panay, the company isn’t having the next Surface Pro device on its mind right now and that Surface Pro 5 doesn’t even exist. His exact words were: “there’s no such thing as a Pro 5.”
The statement was made by Panay in response to a question posed by CNET. He was asked to confirm when will Surface Pro 5 be launched to which he said that currently Surface Pro 4 is doing well and is a product that will remain competitive for the next five years. This indicated that the company doesn’t really have an update on its mind right now.
More clues about Microsoft’s intentions pertaining to Surface Pro 5 comes to light from Panay’s other statement wherein he said that the company doesn’t intend to roll out an update to Surface Pro until it has something great that will revamp the device completely. A simple hardware update to Surface Pro 4 isn’t something that Microsoft intends to provide for the next Surface device says Panay.
He also said that Microsoft will roll out an updated Surface Pro when it has something ‘meaningful’ to offer like substantial increase in battery life or a design update that reduces the weight of the device by manifold all the remaining highly usable and powerful.
Panay’s statement comes at a time when Surface Pro 5 hopefuls were pegging Microsoft’s May 23 event as being the one wherein Redmond will launch the new tablet. That’s something that seems impossible right now given that Panay has made such a statement just days before the event.
