Microsoft has killed the Surface Pro 5 through a single statement that it won’t be releasing any such tablet as it doesn’t exist at this time.
With rumors and speculations suggesting that Surface Pro 5 exists and that Microsoft will be releasing it sometime this year, consumers had almost stopped buying the Surface Pro 4 and that led to a decline in sales revenue of the Surface line-up of devices. Microsoft confirmed decline in sales of Surface Pro 4 earlier in April revealing that the first quarter of 2017 was a rather dull one for Surface Pro 4 sales with a 26 per cent decline in revenue year-over-year. Paul Thurrott revealed earlier this year that Surface Pro 5 exists and will be a minimal upgrade to Surface Pro 4. That got consumers to hope for a new two-in-one no matter how much it had to offer.
That wait is now over as Panos Panay, the corporate vice president for Surface, Microsoft said that the company isn’t having the next Surface Pro device on its mind right now and that Surface Pro 5 doesn’t even exist. His exact words were: “there’s no such thing as a Pro 5.”
This was a statement in response to a question posed by CNET on when will Microsoft release the next Surface Pro device.
Panay said he was optimistic about the capabilities of Surface Pro 4 and how the device is still good to go and competitive for another five years. This statement indicated that Surface Pro 4 is not going anywhere and that it will remain Microsoft’s flagship in the Surface Pro series of devices for a few months to come or until the company decides to release a new Surface Pro. So, why not poke around online and buy Surface Pro 4 with up to 25 per cent discounts.
